The Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace’s “Honouring the Mother” event, supported by #enaevents, concluded successfully
On 16 May 2025, at the Grand Club of Kavala, the “Honouring the Mother” event was held with great success. It was organised by the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace as part of the activities of its Gender Equality Committee, with the support of #enaevents.
The event was dedicated to the mother, highlighting the timeless value of motherhood and its many-sided role in modern society. Through speech, images, music and personal stories, it presented forms of maternal love and selfless giving.
Five mothers from all the regional units of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace were honoured for their contribution to family and society, while lower secondary school pupils presented poems and essays dedicated to the mother, adding a genuine and moving note to the occasion. The Association of Asia Minor Greeks of Chrysoupoli took part with hand-made paintings, lending the event a special artistic character.
The central symbolic figure of the event was Giannoula Zerva-Varsou, a woman from Chrysoupoli, Kavala, who went into the flames to save her child and ultimately lost her life. Her act of self-sacrifice has deeply moved the local community, and a statue has been created in her honour in the area. This statue was the inspiration for the event and was reproduced on the honorary awards presented to the mothers during the evening.
The event was presented by Mr Panagiotis Bardakis, and it was opened by Ms Filio Touloumtzi, who movingly recounted the story of Zerva-Varsou and read a poem dedicated to her memory, marking the start of an evening devoted to the strength of motherhood.
Representatives of the political and local government leadership honoured the event with their presence, delivering warm addresses and taking an active part in the award presentations. Specifically, addresses were given by the Regional Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Mr Christodoulos Topsidis; the Deputy Regional Governor of Kavala, Mr Theodoros Markopoulos; the Thematic Deputy Regional Governor for Public Health, Mr Giorgos Dalakouras; the Regional Councillor for the Regional Unit of Kavala, Mr Alexandros Iosifidis; the MP for the Regional Unit of Kavala, Ms Angeliki Delikari; the MP for the Regional Unit of Kavala, Mr Nikos Panagiotopoulos; the MP for the Regional Unit of Kavala and Thasos, Mr Giannis Paschalidis; and the Chair of the Gender Equality Committee of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Ms Vaso Pavlakaki.
The event was accompanied by live saxophone music and closed with a deeply symbolic finale: every mother received a rose, as a small token of recognition of her role.
The #enaevents team, with consistency and care, designed and supported the delivery of the event, creating an atmosphere of respect, emotion and sincere tribute to the mother.
#enaevents will continue to stand behind initiatives that highlight the social role of women, promote equality and create space for meaningful dialogue and recognition.
